RED TENT: The Rites of Initiation of passage in the life of women
It is said that once the women of some indigenous cultures, during the menstrual cycle, gathered in red tents to rest, pamper each other, regenerate. Only women were allowed access and here they supported each other, as sisters. This tradition whose origins lie in the mists of time today relives all over the world, to nourish a renewed need for sisterhood and female complicity.
This meeting of the Women's House is dedicated to the teaching of the Red Tent: to help women to be proud of their cyclical nature, of their feminine nature, of menstruation itself, which as we well know are often a reason for shame. Suffice it to say that until not so long ago, in societies of a patriarchal nature, menstruating women, as impure, during the cycle were forced to isolate themselves to avoid contaminating food and surrounding people. And if it didn't get that far, the treatment given to them was still disrespectful.
In antiquity, in conjunction with the new moon, all the women of the tribe gathered in the red tent.
Some of them, those of childbearing age, retired there to menstruate all together (at the time the menstrual cycles coincided for the fact of living together and were harmonized with the lunar one), rest, dream. The older ones, on the other hand, now in another vital stage, took care of watching over them so that the tranquility and respect of the sacred days, in which women were free from family and community burdens, were guaranteed.
All the rites of passage of the women took place in this sacred space, whose color recalled that of blood, symbol of the life/death cycle.
It was a large ruby tent, planted among the other tents that made up the camp, and men were forbidden access. It was a place of female devotion, a womb in which all women found refuge and support, a laboratory of wisdom where the mysteries of the female body were deepened.
In contemporary red curtains, women meet to share opinions on important issues such as menstruation, motherhood, accompaniment to first blood and menopause, certain of the fact of finding understanding and support.
In this special meeting THE RED TENT we will dance as well as listen to each other and welcome us; we will dance the Rites of Initiation of passage of women: menarche, motherhood, menopause.
Cost of the evening 20.00 euros.
